Media Reflection #5

I still believe that creators have the responsibility to represent people correctly in their films, at least in most cases. Although our film involves the supernatural, a main theme of it centers around grief and how it affects the main character. Therefore, we had to make sure we handled the subject respectfully, especially in those initial scenes before the MC goes to sleep. There is nothing she does after she gets home that would be unusual for someone to do after they leave a funeral. Her facial expression stays consistently flat, so you can tell she feels empty without it having to be said explicitly. We made it a point to not make her seem crazy or hysterical, as women are so often portrayed in these kinds of horror films. If the opening were to develop into a full film, she would likely be shown as having support from some of her friends and family members, including the unnamed character that left a phone call. She would certainly not be the only person to be affected by the paranormal aspect either.

The film we made was much like the content I consume, as I figured sticking to what I know would be the best option if I wanted to create something I liked. Christy is less familiar with the horror genre outside of this project, but she felt that we would end up doing something interesting with it, and trusted that we'd be able to build off of each other's ideas as we always do when we collaborate. I am glad that this is what we went with, although I would have been open to exploring more light-hearted subjects as well. I believe we would have been able to create something just as amazing under any genre.

My skills have developed significantly, especially with editing. I now know the full range of what can be done with CapCut, which is great, because I can use it for so many other projects. I think it would be really fun to make a short film in college, and I may even take classes or join clubs related to filmmaking. I think it is immensely more enjoyable to be the person creating the media rather than the person consuming it. I also find the process more satisfying than writing or drawing my ideas out, as I feel like it fully engages my mind, leaving me constantly thinking of ways to improve, what to do next, etc.
