Final Cut Comparison #1

Hereditary (2018) Opening Scene

The opening to Hereditary makes different stylistic choices than ours, extending even to the camera movement, being slower, including dollies in, and camera pans/tilts. This is to establish the setting, which appears to be a significant part of the plot. Since this was not the point of our film opening, we did not place as much emphasis on this. Everything is more visible in their film opening, due to higher video quality and brighter lighting as they had a larger budget to work with. However, this was also a stylistic choice, as our films have a purposeful atmospheric difference.

Our films follow similar narratives, involving the death of a loved one, so naturally the costuming and attitudes (e.g., facial expressions) of our characters were similar as well. However, the whole family seems to be impacted in Hereditary, rather than just a single person. This is because the person who died in their film is a relative rather than a friend. They also had a larger cast than us.
