Personal Contribution:

I chose the song based on its relevant theme to the narrative of the video. Additionally, I had the idea to distinguish between the past and the present with color. I also filmed the video, paying close attention to framing, lighting, and movement, and made decisions on camera angles and shots. I edited the video as well, making choices regarding which shots would look best together, and added the color/hazy effect to the scenes from the past.

My knowledge of cinematography informs the artistic choices I make in the video, particularly in terms of framing, color, and visual storytelling. For example, I used my understanding that colors and lighting help set the emotional tone of a scene to create a clear distinction between past and present scenes, using brighter, warmer tones for flashbacks to create a sense of nostalgia, and keeping the natural lighting and shadows for the present to convey a more somber, reflective mood. Additionally, I applied techniques in shot composition and camera angles to guide viewers’ attention and build a stronger emotional connection. For instance, the close-up shot highlighted Christy's solemn expression, allowing the audience to understanding her character's feelings about her friends moving on, and feel more immersed in her experience. The tracking shot of the three of them into the light allows the viewer to feel a part of the action, as if they too were hanging out alongside them, where the cut to the shot of Christy walking by herself into the dark interrupts that motion and flow, which brings more attention to her isolation. By using my knowledge, I was able to communicate the story visually, ensuring that each scene aligns with the narrative’s bittersweet mood.
