Media Reflection #3

Two horror movies I have watched somewhat recently and am quite fond of include The Skeleton Key and Oculus. The Skeleton Key was produced by ShadowCatcher Entertainment, an independent film production company based in Seattle, WA. They commonly collaborate with independent film producers, and both commerical and non-for-profit theaters. They are known for providing finances for films focused on characters and their development. Oculus was produced by Inteprid Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. Interprid Pictures, based in Los Angeles, is known for producing commercial content, primarily horror, for mainstream viewers, and they have financed films in partnership with Universal Studios. Blumhouse Productions, also based in Los Angeles, is also known for the production of horror films, such as the Insidious franchise, although it has produced drama films as well. It has worked with famous directors such as Jordan Peele and M. Night Shyamalan.

Considering all the films I have watched and those that I typically look to watch, I would say overall, I interact more with media that is created by larger companies. I don't do this purposefully, in fact, I pay little attention to who created the content I consume. I would say perhaps some of the lower budget horror films I have seen have been produced by smaller companies, but horror definitely is not the primary content I watch, it is only the content I typically seek out on my own. Most of the films I watch have been in theaters, or in the top ten on Netflix, or ones that my friends have recommended to me, which usually are created by larger companies. That is not to say that I have a preference for films created by larger companies, I just do not typically stray away from what is popular, and of course most trending films are created by larger companies.

That being said, I do not think I am going to be overly conscious of who created the content I interact with in the future. At least, I do not ever see myself using that to determine what films I want to watch. Of course, I may look up who produced a film I have seen if I am curious, and I might do that more often now since I am becoming more aware of it. Whether they are a larger or smaller company, however, does not hold that much significance to me, and I will likely be more interested in knowing what other films they have produced, and perhaps make a note to watch those if I particularly enjoyed the film that I watched. I might also just want to learn more about the company itself, such as what genre of films they commonly produce, when it was created, what other companies, filmmakers, or directors they have partnered with, and other general information about its history. Again, I will likely only do this if I find the film I watch interesting, and really care to know, but I see myself being more curious about the details and ideas behins its creation rather than who financed it.
